Western Maine Bicycle Tour

The breathtaking landscapes of Western Maine are absolutely stunning and deserve to be seen by bicycle. On this tour we will see it all - stunning mountain peaks, acres of farmland, picturesque villages, cascading rivers and shimmering lakes. We even climb Evans Notch in the White Mountain National Forest reaching a height of 1600 feet at its top elevation with a thrilling 1200 foot vertical descent. And, our lodging and dining partners are truly the best in the region, offering an eclectic mix of backcountry hospitality.

Tour Start/End: Fryeburg, Maine - Old Saco Inn
Length of Tour: 5 days, 4 nights
Cycling level: : The terrain is flat, mixed with rolling hills with daily mileages of 30-40+ miles. Most days offer a range of mileage options to suit a variety of abilities. We allow time for participants to enjoy the scenery and camaraderie.
Price: $1175 double occupancy; $1425 single occupancy; includes all lodging, all meals on the tour (4 breakfasts, 4 lunches, 4 dinners), snacks, taxes and gratuities.
Dates: Sunday, August 3 – Thursday, August 7
Airport transportation provided from: Portland, Maine ($50 round trip)

DAY 1: We begin our tour at Old Saco Inn in Fryeburg, Maine. This peaceful and tranquil retreat sits far off the beaten path on the banks of the Old Saco River where you can enjoy magnificent views of the White Mountians, meadows, and forests. Feel free to check in any time after 3 pm and relax next to the river, kayak its course, or go for a's all available to you here. We will have a pre-trip meeting before dinner where you’ll meet the tour leaders, discuss the trip highlights, and review the routes. Dinner tonight will be at the inn, prepared especially for us by our innkeeper.

DAY 2: A full country breakfast will be served in the inn’s dining room at 8 am and we will plan to depart around 9 am. Today's route will be mostly flat with rolling hills as we tour around the Old Saco Valley.  We’ll follow quiet back roads, passing through several small New England villages and through classic Maine farmlands with magnificent views of the mountains framing the fields. Upon our return to the Old Saco Inn, we will relax by the river with kayaking and hiking options available. Once again our innkeeper will prepare us another lovely dinner.

Cycling mileage: 25-35 miles.

Day 3: After fueling up with a full gourmet breakfast, we’ll leave the quiet of the Old Saco behind as we continue our meander through Maine. The next two days will show us some of the best scenery that western Maine has to offer as we follow much of the route of the esteemed Loon Echo Trek, deemed Maine’s toughest century ride (and most scenic!). We’ll stop for two nights at the Bethel Inn & Resort, an elegant traditional country inn that also offers the amenities of a modern resort. We will dine this evening in the Main Dining Room which offers traditional New England and Continental fare, a Yankee Magazine Editor’s Pick.

Cycling mileage: 30-40 miles.

Day 4: Today we will head out for an inspiring day of cycling through beautiful Evans Notch. As we climb this scenic byway we will pass through both the White Mountain National Forest and the Caribou-Speckled Mountain Wilderness. As we crest the notch, take note of the cliffs to the west which provide a nesting area for a recovering population of Peregrine falcons. After a speedy descent through the Notch, we’ll travel back to The Bethel Inn to enjoy the amenities of the resort and another fine dinner.

Cycling mileage: 35-45 miles (option sans Evan's Notch is available).

Day 5: After having several good days of riding behind us, today we'll take the opportunity to sleep in, have a leisurely breakfast, and then spend some time exploring the area. After lunch, we'll transport you back to the Old Saco Inn where we'll say our good-byes.

More mileage is always possible and our SAG wagon is always available if you’d like to catch a ride anywhere along our route. Accommodations and routes are subject to change (but not likely) at any time due to unforeseen circumstances or circumstances beyond Vesta Velo’s control.
