Texas Hill Country Tour

Love him or hate him, you can thank Lance Armstrong for putting Texas on the map as a cycling destination. And you can thank Lady Bird Johnson for the glory of the wildflowers in April. Put the two together and the Texas Hill Country is the perfect place to be for cyclists in springtime. Throw in some Lone Star beer—or Texas Hill Country wine—a longhorn steer or two, some sagebrush and cactus and you’ll never want to leave. And don’t forget Stevie Ray Vaughan, another native son. Live music in Austin, anyone?

DAY 1: Arrive in Austin any time before 6:30 pm when we’ll meet at the hotel for our pre-trip meeting and dinner together. Lodging tonight will be at the Omni Austin Hotel at Southpark, a four-diamond luxury hotel that rises 14 stories above Austin’s flourishing high-tech corridor. Feel free to check in after 3 pm and enjoy the amenities of the hotel . . . an invigorating swim in the pool, a workout in the fully-equipped fitness center, a relaxing massage at the spa, or just unwind in the private luxury of your own room. Dinner tonight will be at the hotel restaurant, the “casually elegant” Onion Creek Grille.

DAY 2: After breakfast at the hotel, we will take a scenic drive through the famous Texas Hill Country on quiet back roads to our base lodging for the next few days, Barons CreekSide. After lunch on the property, we'll enjoy a leisurely ride to legendary Luckenbach, the historic town memorialized in song by Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings in the 70’s. From there we'll ride to a local winery where we'll savor the fruits of the area with a classic Texas wine tasting. Don't worry about that second glass of wine . . . our van will pick us up to take us back to Barons for a sumptuous dinner, prepared just for us.
Lodging: Barons CreekSide    Fredericksburg, Texas      830-990-4048
Cycling mileage: 20-25 miles.

Day 3: Today we will tackle the renowned Willow City Loop—the “queen cycling attraction in Gillespie County” and favorite ride of local cyclists (not to mention those who come from all over the country just to ride it). It is a must-see during wildflower season in mid-to-late spring, one of nature’s true glories, where the bluebonnets abound and all is right with the world. The route is a 55-mile hilly loop that will challenge our climbing skills with some daunting terrain but, in our humble opinion, is more than worth the effort. Dinner tonight will be at one of the fabulous restaurants in town where we can enjoy authentic German cuisine, a tradition of Fredericksburg.
Lodging: Barons CreekSide     Fredericksburg, Texas    830-990-4048
Cycling mileage: 55 miles; easy ride option available.

Day 4: A visit to the Texas Hill Country would not be complete without a trip to Enchanted Rock. Today we'll cycle to this enormous pink granite outcropping, rising mysteriously above the landscape. Legend has it that local Indian tribes ascribed magical and spiritual powers to the rock and made regular pilgrimages to the site. Our ride today will allow ample time to do some hiking in this enchanted area. If you prefer, you can plan a round-trip bike ride—to the rock and then back to town for some shopping on Main Street. If you plan to hike, keep in mind that it is less than 1 mile to the top but you’ll want to leave plenty of time for meandering along the way. The van will transport all hikers back to Barons CreekSide for our final night at this distinctive property. Again, dinner tonight will be at one of the fabulous restaurants in town.
Lodging: Barons CreekSide     Fredericksburg, Texas    830-990-4048
Cycling mileage: 18 (one-way) or 36 miles (round-trip).

Day 5: After a short ride in the morning, we'll depart Fredericksburg and head back to Austin by way of Johnson City (birthplace of our 36th president) and the famous LBJ Ranch. We'll spend our last night at the historic Driskill Hotel on Austin's Sixth Street. The Driskill was built in 1886 by a local cattle baron to serve as a showpiece for the frontier town of Austin, a grand hotel that would rival the palaces of New York, Chicago, and San Francisco. Dinner will be at the award-winning four-diamond Driskill Grill, repeatedly ranked the number one restaurant in Austin. Thanks to the Driskill's location on Austin's famous Sixth Street, we can take in some live music on our last night in Texas.
Lodging: Driskill Hotel     Austin, Texas    512-474-5911
Cycling mileage:  25 miles.

Day 6: After a fine breakfast at the Driskill's 1886 Cafe & Bakery, we'll say our final good-byes, share stories and photos, make plans to see the bluebonnets again next year, and depart for the airport. Thank you, Lance, for sharing your training ground!
